If you've been researching homeschool curriculum for more than five minutes, you've probably discovered something confusing: not all homeschool curriculum is the same.Some programs are Charlotte Mason. Some are classical. Some are unit studies. Some are completely child-led. And while all of those approaches have their place, many parents are simply looking for a traditional homeschool curriculum.
As a second-generation homeschooler and now a homeschool mom myself, I've used and reviewed dozens of curriculum options over the years.
What I've learned is that many families thrive with a structured approach. They want textbooks, workbooks, quizzes, tests, lesson plans, and a clear path from kindergarten right through high school.

What Is a Traditional Homeschool Curriculum?
A traditional homeschool curriculum follows a structured school model. Students work through lessons in sequence, complete assignments, take tests, and gradually build knowledge year after year.
Unlike Charlotte Mason programs that rely heavily on living books, or classical programs that emphasize the Trivium, traditional homeschooling focuses on clear academic progression and mastery of core subjects.

1. BJU Press
Price: Approximately $1,099 per grade level including video streaming

BJU Press is currently the curriculum we use in our own homeschool, and it has become one of my favourite traditional homeschool curriculum options.
The textbooks are colourful and engaging without being distracting. The video teachers do an excellent job of speaking directly to the student, which helps children develop independence much earlier than many parents expect. (My son homeschools himself 95% of the time, which is a lifesaver as I’m a working-at-home mother!)
Academically, BJU sits slightly above average in difficulty without becoming overwhelming. It isn't as intense as Abeka, but it's definitely more rigorous than many gentler homeschool programs.
For our family, it has provided one of the best balances between strong academics, biblical worldview, and parent sanity.

2. Abeka
Price: Approximately $1,350-1,750 per grade level including video streaming
Format: Colourful textbooks and workbooks
Video Lessons: Yes
Rigor: High
Parent Intensity: Moderate to Low with videos
Christian Background: Baptist
If BJU is the balanced middle ground, Abeka is often the rigorous overachiever.
Abeka has long been one of the most popular traditional Christian homeschool curriculum options in the world. Its phonics instruction is outstanding, its academic standards are high, and its review system ensures students don't forget what they've learned.
The downside is that some families find the workload exhausting. I've heard many parents describe feeling burned out after trying to keep up with every lesson exactly as scheduled.
For academically strong students who thrive on structure, however, Abeka can be a fantastic choice.

Christian light education uses light units which are like small workbooks kids can check off one by one. It's pretty black and white though, so don't get it if you value color.
3. Christian Light Education (CLE)
Price: Generally one of the most affordable options
Format: LightUnits
Video Lessons: Limited
Rigor: Moderately High
Parent Intensity: Low
Christian Background: Mennonite
CLE may be one of homeschooling's best-kept secrets.
Instead of large textbooks, students work through smaller booklets called LightUnits. These make progress feel manageable and allow parents to purchase curriculum gradually rather than all at once.
The pages aren't flashy. In fact, they're fairly plain compared to many modern programs. But CLE consistently delivers strong academic results at an excellent price.
If you're looking for a traditional homeschool curriculum that combines affordability, structure, and solid academics, CLE deserves serious consideration.
4. Rod & Staff
Price: Budget-friendly
Format: Traditional workbooks and textbooks
Video Lessons: No
Rigor: High
Parent Intensity: Moderate
Christian Background: Mennonite
Rod & Staff is probably the closest thing homeschooling has to an old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse education.
The books are black and white. The layout is simple. There are no flashy graphics or exciting videos.
And yet many experienced homeschoolers swear by it.
Its grammar and mathematics courses are particularly respected, and many parents find their children develop strong academic foundations through its consistent and thorough approach.
5. ACE (Accelerated Christian Education)
Price: Moderate
Format: PACEs
Video Lessons: Limited
Rigor: Moderate
Parent Intensity: Very Low
Christian Background: Evangelical Christian
ACE is built around workbook-style booklets called PACEs.
Students work independently through material, set goals, complete assignments, and mark much of their own work.
Its greatest strength is independence. Parents with multiple children often appreciate how much students can accomplish on their own.
The trade-off is that some students can move through material quickly without developing the same depth of understanding found in more teacher-intensive programs.
Lifepace is one of many mastery based homeschool curriculum options.
6. Lifepac
Price: Moderate
Format: Colourful worktexts
Video Lessons: No
Rigor: Moderate
Parent Intensity: Low
Christian Background: Alpha Omega Publications
Lifepac offers a nice middle ground between traditional textbooks and independent workbook learning.
Subjects are divided into smaller units, making the workload feel less intimidating. Students can often work quite independently, while parents still maintain oversight.
Families who find ACE too plain and Abeka too intensive often find themselves drawn to Lifepac.
Horizons by Alpha Omega Publishing is very traditioanal and much more teacher or parent-led than most of these programs.
7. Horizons
Price: Moderate
Format: Colourful workbooks
Video Lessons: No
Rigor: Moderate to High
Parent Intensity: High
Christian Background: Alpha Omega Publications
Horizons is one of the most colourful traditional homeschool curriculum programs available.
Unlike Lifepac, Horizons is much more teacher-led. It uses a spiral learning approach, meaning students continually review previously learned material throughout the year.
Many younger children absolutely love the bright pages and variety of activities.
Parents should know, however, that Horizons generally requires more involvement than programs like ACE, CLE, or Monarch.
Monarch is 100% online which means you don't have lots of loose paper and books. but it means things can become boring, espeically as it's like reading textbooks off the computer a lot of the time!
8. Monarch
Price: Subscription based
Format: Fully online
Video Lessons: Some multimedia content
Rigor: Moderate
Parent Intensity: Very Low
Christian Background: Alpha Omega Publications
Monarch takes traditional homeschooling and puts it online.
Assignments are automatically graded, progress is tracked digitally, and parents can monitor everything from a dashboard.
I've found that some students consider Monarch a little boring compared to video-based programs. However, if your goal is to get school done efficiently with minimal paperwork, Monarch can work extremely well.
It remains one of the most independent traditional homeschool curriculum options available.
The core schoolboxes in Schoolhouse Teachers are traditional in nature. You’ll need a printer to print it out but it’s an amazing price and there’s unlimited curriculum options at your fingertips!
9. SchoolhouseTeachers
Price: Around $300 per year or lifetime options often around $1,000+
Format: Online membership
Video Lessons: Many included
Rigor: Varies
Parent Intensity: Varies

SchoolhouseTeachers is one of the best bargains in homeschooling.
Instead of purchasing individual curriculum packages, families gain access to hundreds of courses covering virtually every subject imaginable.
Even better, lifetime memberships are often available. For a little over a thousand dollars, some families can effectively purchase curriculum access for their entire homeschooling journey.
If you're tired of reading curriculum reviews and constantly switching programs, SchoolhouseTeachers offers an appealing all-in-one solution.
Masterbooks is Charlotte Mason inspired but it's really a gentle traditional curriculum at its heart!
10. Master Books
Price: Affordable to Moderate
Format: Colourful workbooks and textbooks
Video Lessons: Limited
Rigor: Gentle to Moderate
Parent Intensity: Low
Christian Background: Creationist Christian
Master Books has become incredibly popular among Christian homeschoolers in recent years.
The lessons are short. The pages are attractive. The teacher preparation is minimal.
Families who feel overwhelmed by longer school days often find Master Books refreshing.
That said, I generally consider Master Books gentler academically than BJU Press, Abeka, CLE, or Rod & Staff. For some children that's a blessing. For others, it may require careful placement and supplementation.
